The purpose of this surgery is to enlarge small breasts
or breasts that diminished or that suffered atrophy after
pregnancy. It is also indicated as correction of asymmetrical
breasts or as a complementary treatment to mammary reconstruction
following tumors. This type of surgery consists of the introduction
of a silicone implant on the form of gel involved in resistant
material made of several textures. This is a substance which
is well accepted by the body. The implants, domestic or imported,
in several sizes, are chosen by common consent between doctor
and patient. Breastfeeding is perfectly possible if the implant
does not interfere with the physiology of the breast.
incision can be made in the infra-mammary fold, around the
areola or in the armpit under general anesthesia combined
with local anesthesia. The mammary tissue is undermined and
the implant can be placed below the mammary gland or the pectoral
muscle. After suturing, surgical adhesive tapes are placed
on top of the incision and a supporting bra (surgical) is
maintained for the patients better comfort. The incision
is discrete. The procedure takes an average of 60 to 90 minutes.
If the patient feels any pain, it can be dealt with ordinary
painkillers. The patient is released from hospital in 24 hours.
During the initial period the patient should rest to some
extent, after 20 and 30 days the patient may drive and practice
light exercise, respectively. Swelling and discrete hematoma
disappear naturally. After 30 days the patient can be moderately
exposed to the sun. The final result can be verified around
the 18th month. Possibly the so called encapsulation may happen,
in consequence of an excessive inflammatory reaction, causing
an uncomfortable local hardening for the patient. Massage
is recommended as a preventive measure during recovery.
